Water tells the tale of drug use
Around 360 kilos of cocaine are consumed every day in Europe. That’s about two and a half tonnes of cocaine a week. These figures come from an international study in which scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology took part. They’ve been testing wastewater in 19 European cities for traces of illicit drug use. So how do Swiss cities compare with their European neighbours? WRS’s Adam Beaumont put that question to Dr. Christoph Ort, who took part in the study:
