Train travelers beware—luggage on the seat may cost you

What happens if you run to catch a train without buying a ticket—or if you insist on keeping your luggage on the seat next to you? WRS’s Lucia Walton traveled from Lausanne to Geneva with Jean Philippe Schmidt from Swiss Federal Railways. He told her about all of the new changes and how they will hit you in the pocket if you’re not careful:

SWISS FEDERAL RAILWAYS CHANGES

Starting from December 11, 2011:

  • Rail ticket prices are increasing by 6 percent across the board.

  • If you board the train without a ticket, you will have to pay the full-price ticket fare plus a 90 franc fine.
  • If you insist on keeping your luggage on the seat next to you when the train is full, you will be charged a half-fare ticket for your luggage.

Regarding keeping your luggage on the seat, I presume that the same conditions apply to the military sevice?? Whenever they travel in groups, they use a minimum of 4 seats for their equipment, also they block the exits.

As said, the CFF do offer a service where you can send your luggage in advance, obviously the are not promoting this service very well.

Lastly, to charge full price ticket plus a 90.00 franc fine for someone who does not have a ticket ohe train is an outrage. I travel very frequently, sometimes the ticket machine is out of order. Also, for a tourist, it can be a bit confusing, which ticket to buy, what happens if they go on a train without a ticket by accident?

Luggage racks are not secure. Storing luggage on a rack ’within’ sight does not ensure it will not be taken. Lost a computer notebook and valuables when a thief grabbed laptop case from overhead rack and ran off train in Nyon!
