Switzerland submits UN resolution to 'switch off' nuclear arms
The fact that there are enough nuclear weapons in the world to wipe out the entire planet more than once may not come as a surprise, however, a lesser known fact is that much of this arsenal is on permanent high-alert and can be operational within minutes. Switzerland believes it is time to put an end to this. Last week, the country teamed up with Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand and Nigeria to submit a resolution at the UN General Assembly, saying all nuclear weapons should be taken off high alert. To find out more, WRS’s Pete Forster asks Liviu Horovitz, a senior researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), how the world got to this precarious point in the first place:
