Swissmedic assesses risks of 'combined' contraceptive pill

A controversy has been brewing this week over the contraceptive pill. Authorities in France are moving to ban Diane-35, a “combined” pilled used to treat acne and as contraception, after it was revealed that four women taking this pill have died since 1990. Now, the Cantonal Hospital in Olten says they believe the Diane-35 pill may have been the reason behind a woman’s death there two weeks ago. Swissmedic, which controls the licensing of drugs in Switzerland, is currently assessing if they’ll follow in France’s footsteps. WRS’s Jo Fahy speaks to Dr. Gabriele Merki, head of family planning at University Hospital Zurich and a member of the Swiss Society of Gynaecology:
