Swiss neutrality questioned in funding of Syrian rebels
Switzerland’s famous neutrality has been questioned after it was revealed the foreign ministry contributed 60,000 francs to fund secret meetings between Syrian opponents to President Bashar al-Assad in Berlin. Last month they also organized a meeting between Tuareg rebels in Mali. The move was criticized by other factions in the country’s conflict as offering support to those who want to partition Mali and create a new country in the north. So why is a neutral country like Switzerland involving itself in what could be seen as a partisan way? That’s the question WRS’s Dave Goodman put to Daniel Möckli, head of strategic trends analysis at the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich:
