Swiss-Libya row drags on, Göldi having hard time in prison
Italy’s foreign minister Franco Frattini will head to Tripoli later today. He’s the latest in a line of European ministers to travel there to try to resolve the conflict between Libya and Switzerland. For over two weeks now, the European Union has tried to mediate a solution. Libya has refused entry to many EU citizens in retaliation for Switzerland’s blocking Schengen visas for Libyan elites. For an update on the situation, Carla Drysdale turns to our reporter Jordan Davis who’s been following the story from Bern:

The well being of Max Göldi is entirely the responsibility of UN member, Libya. This behaviour out of Libya in support of Hannibal Gadhafi, is utterly intolerable. And Franco Frattini has no pride in himself or Italy. In stark contrast to Franco Frattini, Switzerland’s FM. Micheline Calmy-Rey is showing good leadership vis-à-vis the intolerable Gadhafi and his minions, who think that they can kidnap Swiss and/or other foreigners, at will, and hold them for ransom. Or, as per the example of Hannibal-the-lesser, behave like a bunch of arrogant louts when abroad.
Swizerland with out any knowledge from european countries dragged on another 24 countries in this problem. what swizerland should know is that because of their problem it is risking the live hood of thousands families which they have nothing to do with this problem. does the swiss foriegn minister how many famalies are living in tense times because of the swiss? Also is swizerland going to compensate the workers and the buisness poeple who are losing thier jobs and buisness in Libya? Why swizerland does not engage in diplomacy and solve this problem as soon as possible? Two things wrong does not make one good thing. Swizerland shoul seek the common sense.
In reply to Tony Attard: Libya does not engage in diplomacy, except for the diplomacy of belligerence. Switzerland, with great reluctance took this action because its EU and Schengen counterparts would make no effort to stand up to Libya’s loutish behaviour. Switzerland’s neutrality has enabled many international disputes to be successfully resolved, but Libya seeks to use the pride that Switzerland has in its position, to beat up on Switzerland. However, Switzerland can afford to hold out until complete satisfaction is given, since even if Libya claims that they have great interest from Russian and Chinese energy companies, Libya gets to suffer the consequences of being a price taker, in a buyer’s market, headed up by China and Russia.
