Grocers slash prices in battle for shoppers

It has been a mind-blowing week for Swiss grocers engaging in tit-for-tat price reductions. Discounters Denner and Spar fired the first salvos last week, cutting prices on selected products. Then supermarket chain Coop said it would boycott dozens of imported brands when suppliers failed to drop costs enough. On Wednesday, Migros, Coop’s rival, said it would slash prices from 10 to 20 percent on hundreds of products. With stores in neighbouring countries luring Swiss customers for cross-border shopping to take advantage of the low euro, the battle for shoppers rages on. WRS’s Tony Ganzer reports:
