Survey: 40 percent prefer Swiss rather than foreign doctor

The results of a survey by Comparis.ch, 20 Minutes and GFS Institute, show that 91 percent of patients feel “very” or “somewhat happy” with their doctor. However, more than 40 percent believe it is important to have a Swiss doctor. WRS’s Alex Helmick talks to the president of the Swiss Medical Association, Jacques de Haller, about some of these figures:

Professionalism, high levels of skill, approachability, continuity of service over a period of years and, above all, an intrinsic knowledge by a local person makes an excellent G.P. and Specialist. The local doctor, I feel, will always be preferred to a foreigner. They understand the subtle nuances of the community in which they were trained and now work. However, a cases by case assessment does apply. Problems arise with foreign doctors when cultural attitudes / traditions are incompatible with the local populus. It is these elements, that influence initial assessment and subsequent treatment.
