Southern Europeans pitch tents here to ride out the crisis
Switzerland is weathering the financial crisis much better than other European countries, and that’s proving attractive for workers in the EU. With jobs drying up across southern Europe, many are taking advantage of the freedom of movement rules and coming to Switzerland to search for work. The Federal Migration Office estimates the number of people coming from Spain to Switzerland in the first six months of 2012 was up 30 percent on 2011’s figures. Some of these EU citizens no doubt stay with friends and family. Others pitch tents as Victoria Morgan reports:
