Roma wedding in Valais field sparks tension
Every summer, Switzerland becomes one of the stopovers for Europe’s last nomadic people, the Roma travelers. Most who come here are French citizens and the canton of Vaud is a favorite destination. The two sides have developed a kind of casual settlement over the years. But with the canton of Valais it’s a different story. A big gathering of Roma travelers is underway there for a wedding in a field, and neither the farmer nor the police knew what to do. Tensions are running high. WRS’s Lucas Chambers has this story:
