Protected status of great white sharks questioned after attacks

Last weekend a surfer was killed by a great white shark off the western coast of Australia—160 kilometres north of the city of Perth. The 21-year-old was the fifth person to have been killed by a great white in less than a year in the state of Western Australia.The latest death has prompted the state’s fisheries minister to question whether the protected status of great whites should be lifted. This would mean they could be hunted and killed once again. But is killing great whites really the answer? WRS’s Adam Beaumont put that question to Dr. Nick Dulvy. He’s co-chair of the Shark Specialist Group at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, based in Gland, Switzerland:
