Proposed DNA database stems from reformed criminal code, says police
The proposal by Jura’s police chief to have asylum seekers give DNA samples has taken much of the political world by surprise. He says young North African men who’ve come to Switzerland since the Arab spring are responsible for a sharp rise in property crimes. He says having a database of their DNA samples would help his officers fight crime. The idea is so taboo that many politicians tongues are tied, and many in the federal palace say more time is needed to digest the arguments.
