Private defence company sets up in Basel
The decision by one of the world’s largest security contractors to set up a Swiss holding company has generated concern at cantonal and federal level. London based Aegis Defence Services is now wholly owned by a holding company in Basel. This effectively moves the firm’s headquarters to Switzerland. The company employs an estimated 20,000 soldiers mostly in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of them are on contract to the defence department of the United States. WRS’s Vincent Landon has more.

“…no operative activities will be carried out in Switzerland.” Can you really trust a statement from a firm that violates international law as a business practice? Aegis is in the business of killing civilians in Afghanistan. There is no Afghan army - the people that Aegis is killing in Afghanistan are unquestionably civilians. The fact that america is also participating in these war crimes does nothing to alter these facts. Any politician who believes Aegis (and its CIA handlers) can or will confine its activities in a manner that will protect CH from being implicated in war crimes is profoundly incompetent.
Swiss neutrality is certainly at risk here in that these mercenaries are irrefutably engaged not only in armed conflicts, but in armed conflicts that are clearly illegal. The u.s. has not declared war on Afghanistan. Rather, the u.s. has stupidly “declared” war on a tactic. As such, Aegis’ participation is illegal on its face.
CH had better immediately implement a piece of legislation designed to banish america’s mercenaries at once and permanently. Anything less will lead to further usage (perhaps a few extraordinary renditions - maybe some secret torture sites housing children like Omar Khadr) of CH by the world’s most belligerent war-making regime. The u.s. places no restrictions on what mercenaries such as Aegis can do. The renowned Swiss neutrality is meaningless if the most criminally insane are allowed to operate from within Swiss borders. If these psychopaths are allowed to operate from within CH, Switzerland will be reduced to just another of america’s complicit puppets - aiding and abetting some of the most heinous war crimes man has ever witnessed.
