Outgoing Interior Minister Pascal Couchepin addressed parliamentary collegues at the Federal Palace in Bern before the result of today’s election was announced.
The process took about two hours and consisted of four rounds of voting. In the last round, it was down to Burkhalter and Christian Democrat Urs Schwaller, with Burkhalter edging out Schwaller 129 votes to 106.
Burkhalter served both in the Neuchâtel cantonal parliament and the city executive. Both governments attended today’s elections.
