Novartis fights patent battle in India over cancer drug
Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis begins a high-profile legal battle in India today. It’s defending the patent of one of its blockbuster cancer drugs known as Glivec. And it’s a case that the global pharma industry is set to follow quite carefully. It comes just after Roche lost a landmark patent case last week. The company was trying to block an Indian generics manufacturer from making a product Roche said was too similar to its own. Why this latest spate of legal battles over drug patents? WRS’s Pete Forster put that question to Professor Daniel Kraus. He specializes in innovation law at the University of Neuchâtel and explains last week’s verdict against Roche:
