Second World War cannons in Swiss Alps to be fired one last time
Switzerland installed cannons in the Alps as a defense strategy to fend off attacks during the Second World War. While this may have made perfect sense for a tiny country surrounded by warring nations, times have changed. Now Swiss soldiers are set to fire the massive artillery for the last time during exercises at the Lukmanier Pass, near the border of Graubünden and Ticino. Alexandre Vautravers is head of international relations at Webster University in Geneva and the editor-in-chief of the Swiss Military Review magazine.
