Law expert calls naturalization initiative 'unconstitutional'

Swiss voters head to the polls Sunday to decide on a People’s Party-sponsored intitiative that would allow municipalities to put requests for naturalization up for a popular vote. Andreas Auer, a constitutional law professor at the University of Zurich and the director of Aarau-based Research Centre on Direct Democracy, told WRS’s Jordan Davis the initiative would threaten naturalization applicants’ basic rights.

The Swiss People’s Party launched a proposal aimed at restoring ballots on citizenship applications. The initiative seeks to try to overturn an effective ban by the Federal Court five years ago. A nationwide vote is due to take place on June 1, 2008. Swiss Government rejects the naturalisation initiative. (KEYSTONE/Salvatore Di Nolfi)
