Lausanne scientists envisage underground cities
Living underground used to be the stuff of science fiction but as the population grows and building space becomes more limited it could soon become a viable option. Geologists working on The Deep City project at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne have proposed moving many of the places we visit every day beneath the earth’s surface. But is it practical? What are the benefits and the costs? WRS’s Dave Goodman spoke to Honorary Geology Professor Aurèle Parriaux about the project and began by asking what we might be going underground to do:
