Health insurance costs set to rise, but less than last year

The Federal Office of Public Health says health insurance premiums will rise by 2.2 percent for adults with a 300 franc deductible. The office did not say how much premiums will rise for those with higher deductibles. The 2.2 percent increase is much lower than last year’s 6.5 percent hike. WRS’s Alex Helmick talks about the increase and how to find the best insurance rates with Zeynep Ersan Berdoz, editor in chief of consumer magazine Bon à Savoir:

SAMPLE FIGURES
These figures are indicative and will depend on your health insurance, excess and model:

Appenzell Inner Rhodes will have the steepest rise: 5.5%

Two cantons will see a decrease: Bern -0.6% and Ticino -1.0%

In Western Switzerland:

Fribourg +4.4%
Jura +3.1%
Geneva +2.9%
Valais +2.3%
Vaud +1,5%
Neuchâtel +1.4%

Our daughter holds a Swiss C permit and is doing graduate studies abroad. If she take out full health insurance in the country where she is studying is she still required to carry Basic LAMAL Insurance here in Switzerland? We’ve been advised by our Canton that she must continue carrying Basic insurance in Switzerland or jeapordize her C permit.

Intras, became Intras/CSS last year. To lower our premium we’re changing to a less ’private’ CSS policy for next year. CSS is now requiring we fill out a medical questionaire about our health records for the past 10 years before authorizing this change. Will they use this information to restrict their coverage? Since they already have our health records from the past 10 years with Intras, are we still required to do this?

(please don’t use my last name as I don’t want to have problems with CSS)
