Heliskiing under attack again
For the past 20 years this activity has drawn fire from environmental groups and mountaineers alike. They say 15,000 flights a year disturb people and wildlife—and pollute the atmosphere. Armed with 12,000 signatures, this group now hopes to put pressure on the federal government to impose a ban. Heliski operators say they’re victims of witch hunt, but some seem willing to compromise. Heliskiing DOES disturb wildlife in an unimaginable way, but as long as there is money involved many people find it convenient to ignore this fact. There is no place one cannot get to on skis to enjoy the same slopes if they are willing, experienced and committed to the effort involved. Having the money to pay to make life extremely simple and easy is no excuse to pollute the environment and ruin the lives of the very nature people seek to enjoy. Genevan do not allow tourist flight boats to land on Lac Leman or noisy water jet-skis to ruin the lives of those enjoying the Swiss lakes, so why are the animals lives given no consideration? If people are too lazy to get to the regions they want to ski, let them take up a sport they can actually handle - say. golf…. Let them continue and pretty soon they will pay some company to put them on top of the Matterhorn, since that too requires a little effort.
