Lost love over Swiss trains
For the first time since 1987, the number of passenger kilometres has decreased. In the first half of 2012 it dropped from 8.7 billion passenger kilometres to 8.5 billion. Passenger revenue has dropped even more steeply, down a third from 2011. The Swiss Federal Railways blames it on the economic crisis—fewer tourists means fewer travelers. WRS’s Pete Forster speaks to Caroline Beglinger from the Swiss Association for transport and environment, a lobby group supporting more public transport, and asks her if she buys the railways position:
