German-Swiss relations tense after reported purchase of stolen bank data

Reports that the German state of North Rhine Westphalia bought two CDs of stolen Swiss bank data this week comes at a sensitive time for both Switzerland and Germany. Both countries’ finance ministers have condemned the still-unconfirmed purchase. A buy that runs counter to the spirit of a new tax accord that’s supposed to come into effect next year. It would ban buying stolen bank data and force Swiss banks to collect taxes on up-to-now undeclared German assets. The text of the accord is likely going to go before Swiss voters in November. And as WRS’s Jordan Davis reports, the task of the accords’ defenders has only gotten harder after this week:
