Foreigners running for office in Geneva? Voters to decide
How much of a say should foreigners have in the politics of Switzerland if they have lived here a long time? Geneva politicians are currently addressing this question as lawmakers draft the canton’s new constitution, which will be put to a vote in a year’s time. The question of foreigners being allowed to stand for office in local elections was due to be part of the draft constitution. However, just over a week ago, a right-wing majority within the assembly ruled it should be put to a public vote as a separate question from the constitution itself. WRS’s Dave Goodman discusses this issue with Swiss People’s Party MP Yves Nidegger and Green Party member Yves de Matteis, who is a member of Geneva’s communal assembly:
