Bern flood causes millions worth of damage

Several waterways brimming with rain and snowmelt burst their banks in Swiss valleys in Valais and the Bernese Oberland on Monday, forcing some residents to be evacuated overnight and disrupting train service in the region. WRS’s Pete Forster gets an update on the situation from Hans-Jürg Käser, Minister of Security, Canton of Bern, and Fritz Jost, head of emergency administration for Kandersteg:

Trains running between Brienz and Meieringen, and Zweilütschinen and Lauterbrunnen are expected to be disrupted for the next 10 days. Check the SBB website for the latest interruptions.

The Federal Office for the Environment this morning reduced the warning for Lake Thun and the Aare River, which flows through Bern, to level two from level three. Still people are advised not to walk or park cars close to waterways there.

Lake Thun and Lake Brienz are already filled to the brim, officials say.

Rivers in Leukerbad in canton Valais were also dangerously high on Monday. Residents there are being told to boil water before drinking it because of the mud and stones churned up, but there is no contamination.

Officials say some areas are getting rainfalls seen only once a century.

PRAY all can be made safe; for no one at all trapped, and SAFETY ARRIVES to those in need soon.

I would Pride the Swiss development teams for Practiced drills to support areas, First Responders and Everyone!
