Blatter remains head of scandal-plagued FIFA

FIFA president Sepp Blatter appears set for re-election after being cleared of wrongdoing in the Zurich-based organization’s latest corruption scandal. Blatter, a Swiss citizen, was absolved of blame on Sunday by a hearing of the ethics committee of the world’s governing body of football. His rival, Mohamed Bin Hammam, was provisionally suspended from FIFA’s executive committee pending further investigations, along with Jack Warner, another influential member of the committee. Bin Hammam had, in any case, withdrawn his candidacy, hours before the hearing. FIFA then confirmed that the election for the president will go ahead on June 1, with Blatter as the only candidate and set for an automatic re-election.
