Eurovision: Where politics and pop collide

The annual battle to claim Europe’s most coveted pop prize begins tonight. Forty-two nations will battle it out in the 57th Eurovision Song Contest being held for the first time in Baku, Azerbaijan. Switzerland’s hopes of getting to the grand final for the second year running are pinned on Sinplus—two brothers from Ticino singing in the first semi-final this evening. Human rights organisations have used the buildup to the competition to highlight alleged abuses and lack of media freedom in Azerbaijan. However, organisers say the event is all about the music. From Baku, WRS’s Dave Goodman looks at what is and isn’t on show at this year’s competition:
