Eritreans 'afraid' of possible changes to Swiss ayslum law
Eritreans are the largest group of asylum seekers in Switzerland but changes to the law could soon prevent others joining them. Since 2005 those who escape forced indefinite conscription in their country are automatically granted asylum here. Of the 17,000 Eritreans who have sought asylum in Switzerland, 90 percent said it was on the grounds of military conscription. But Parliament is currently discussing whether being a deserter is a sufficient motive. Father Mussie Zerai has recently been appointed as representative of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Catholic community in Switzerland.
