Environmentalists skeptical about enforcement of second homes law
Last March the Swiss voted to limit the number of holiday homes and apartments to 20 percent of a town’s housing stock, but the devil is in the details. For the past five months, both sides of the issue have continued to debate just how that initiative should be applied. Environmentalists wanted the strictest interpretation; Alpine cantons fought for the most wiggle room. Yesterday the Federal Council released a much-awaited ordinance giving a clear road map for the next few years. Commentators say tourist areas have gotten major concessions. However, what do the people behind the text think? WRS’s Jordan Davis spoke with one of the faces of the “yes” campaign, Vera Weber, daughter of Franz Weber, whose name was part of the initiative:
