Christian Democrat's comments on gay adoption ignite debate
Under Swiss law, there are still hurdles blocking gay couples from adopting children. If we look at what goes on in practice, though, more and more couples actually do. So should the law be changed? This week Christian Democrat president Christophe Darbellay told newspaper Le Temps that he didn’t buy the argument that gay adoption should be legalized since many gay people are already parents. He said by the same logic cocaine use should be legalized since many people take the drug in spite of the law. To discuss this topic WRS’s Dave Goodman talks to Yves Nidegger of the Swiss People’s Party and Martin della Valle co-president of the Rainbow Families association which campaigns for the rights of gay parents:

Thank you for covering this important topic. I favor changing the adoption laws in Switzerland to allow gay couples to adopt children. Having two loving parents is a blessing - more than many children with hetereosexual parents receive. It is not logical to allow single parents to adopt but yet deny loving couples of the same gender to do so. Any adult who passes the strict psychological and socio-economic criteria for adoptive parenthood should be allowed to become parents, regardless of their sexual preference. Please, Switzerland, put aside your old prejudices, educate yourselves, and think about what is fair.
A growing body of scientific evidence demonstrates that children who grow up with one or two parents who are gay or lesbian fare as well in emotional, cognitive, social, and sexual functioning as do children whose parents are heterosexual. Evidence shows that children’s optimal development is influenced more by the nature of the relationships and interactions within the family unit than by its particular structural form (Perrin, 2002). Too High a Price: The Case Against Restricting Gay Parenting (American Civil Liberties Union 2006): Social scientists have been researching the children of lesbian and gay parents for more than 20 years. This rich body of research, summarized in this book, proves that parents’ sexual orientation and gender don’t matter to children’s development; what matters is having committed, nurturing parents.
