Biel bistro shut as cocaine impacts on injection centers
Social outreach centres and places where addicts can openly take drugs in a safe environment have long been hailed a success in Switzerland. They cut down on deaths amongst users and give social services a way to get in touch with people who need help. But one of these centres in Biel has run into serious problems. The social bistro Yucca in the city is going to be shut down and it has an adjacent safe injection room which is going to be moved close to the railway station. The work done in the canton of Bern was admired around the country, but things have turned sour. Pierre-Yves Moeschler, who’s responsible for social issues on the local council in Biel, told WRS’s Jo Fahy about the users:
