Are the Swiss afflicted with voter fatigue?
On Sunday voters rejected all three items on the national ballot by massive margins. But the big winner that day was abstention. Sixty-two percent of voters stayed away from the polls. And three-quarters of those who did bother to vote rejected an initiative to put many foreign treaties up for a mandatory referendum. In other words, they voted overwhelmingly against having to vote even more. We couldn’t help but wonder if that and the low turnout aren’t signs of voter fatigue.
