A Swiss Army knife that tips the scales

Looking for that uniquely Swiss gift to send to family and friends for the holidays? World Radio Switzerland’s Jordan Davis looks at a world-record Swiss Army knife.

That little red pocket knife already has a mythical reputation.

For example, there’s an old episode of the American T-V show Rescue 9-1-1 where airline passengers perform emergency surgery on a  man choking in flight with help of a Swiss Army knife.

For those who want to go beyond the odd emergency tracheotomy in the aisle of an airplane, Wenger has come out with what Guinness has classified as the world’s largest pocket knife. Peter Hug is Wenger’s CEO.

“A couple of years ago, one of our knife makers said, ‘Why not put all the tools on our Swiss Army knife into one single piece?’” he explained.

It not only slices and dices. Its eighty-seven tools magnify small type, find magnetic north, clean the faces of your golf clubs and clip cigars. The handcrafted knife measures twenty-four centimeters wide. Hug says the item is geared more towards collectors.

“It is definitely not meant to be used out of your pocket when you are camping,” he says. “But, if you want to use it, each single piece is fully functional.”

Owners might want to reinforce their pockets for this knife, though. It tips the scales nearly one and a half kilos.

But it does do this other nifty trick: it lightens wallets, by around a thousand US dollars.

Love the site and will be listening on line. I have a blind friend who loves the knives, and must own at least 25 or 30 of them. I’ll tell him about your web site.
