Volcano in Iceland
Wednesday, 21 April, 2010The volcanic ash cloud that resulted in a five-day closure of much Europe’s airspace was costly—in many ways. Airlines say they’ve lost $200 million a day and airports say they’ve lost a total of 150 million euros. Now there’s talk that airlines are demanding a bailout. WRS’s Carla Drysdale asked Charles Wyplosz, a professor of international economics at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. if government compensation was in order:

Monday, 19 April, 2010The volcanic eruption in Iceland has caused economic chaos for airlines and passengers as more than 63,000 flights have been grounded since the eruption last week. In Switzerland, air space remains closed Monday. So how does that impact the country’s supermarkets? Will imported foods be stalled because of all the grounded aircrafts? WRS’s Alex Helmick reports:

It’s hard to blame the reporters, really. Eyjafjallajökull is just plain hard to say. Some are avoiding it all together. We received an email this morning from Paul, who says it’s not fair that broadcasters avoid mentioning its name: “It would certainly be different if it were Etna or Stromboli or Pinatubo, or even Popocatépetl. So why not the poor Iceland volcano? If the journalists had made an effort they would have been able to pronounce the name of Eyjafjallajökull.”
Luckily an industrious Icelander has put together an “educational video” to help out struggling news readers that’s quickly making the YouTube rounds.
