Haitians in Switzerland: 'Our government isn't doing enough' Friday, 14 January, 2011This week, Haitians here in Switzerland have been marking the sad one-year anniversary of the country’s devastating earthquake last January. The Swiss Haitian Club has organized a full mass tomorrow in Lausanne, and groups have been coming together to rehearse as a choir, give each other support and share their impressions. WRS’s Lucas Chambers went to meet them:
Haiti's children have heaps of troubles Wednesday, 12 January, 2011The earthquake in Haiti last year separated over a thousand children from their parents. Most have since been reunited with family members, but the troubles aren’t over for Haiti’s kids. Young boys can be found scavenging through burning mountains of trash; girls are frequently victims of rape in the tent cities. Many aid agencies are still on the ground helping—for now. But as crisis funds dry up, the international community’s commitment to Haiti’s children will be put to the test. WRS’s Jordan Davis reports from Grand-Goâve:
Haiti's painful reconstruction drags on Wednesday, 12 January, 2011The most visible sign that Haiti’s recovery from the earthquake is painfully slow is the more than 1,200 camps of earthquake survivors. They line roads. They’re tucked into virtually every vacant lot. One sprawls across the plaza in front of the crumpled remains of the presidential palace in Port-Au-Prince. For the year ahead the Interim Haiti Reconstruction Commission has set a goal of getting 400,000 people out of the camps by the end of the year. WRS’s Jordan Davis visited Port-au-Prince’s largest camp—and he says for the people living there that goal seems impossibly optimistic:
Surveying a year of disaster relief in Haiti Wednesday, 12 January, 2011WRS’s Conor Lennon invited a panel to discuss the state of reconstruction in Haiti, one year after the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010:
How Swiss Solidarity funds are being spent in Haiti Wednesday, 12 January, 2011After the earthquake, Swiss Solidarity—which is Swiss Broadcasting Corporation’s humanitarian aid partner—received CHF 66 million. Where will that money go? One recipient is Handicap International’s mobile outreach teams, which go out into the neighborhoods and camps of Port-au-Prince to find people who are living with injuries or are disabled and in need of help. As WRS’s Jordan Davis reports the teams find many people after the quake who were treated but never got the follow-up care they need:
Swiss of the Year: 'We have fallen in love with these wonderful people' Wednesday, 12 January, 2011The massive aid operation in Haiti since last January’s earthquake has drawn emergency specialists from all over the world. But for one Swiss pediatrician, Haiti has been home for a good deal longer—and his relationship with the island goes back 15 years. This week, Rolf Maibach was chosen by the public as Swiss Person of the Year, jointly with Marianne Kaufmann, a nurse working alongside him in Haiti. The 67-year-old doctor heads the Albert Schweizer hospital in Deschapelles, which has treated 100,000 patients in the last year—for free. That’s twice as many as before the earthquake. WRS’s Catherine Allen spoke with Maibach, and began by asking him about his reaction to being chosen as Swiss Person of the Year:
The silver lining in Haitian hospital care Tuesday, 11 January, 2011The earthquake in Haiti a year ago drew attention to the woeful situation of its public health system. Swiss humanitarian aid teams rushed in to help shore up Port-au-Prince’s main hospital. In the time since, NGOs have been operating clinics and hospitals across the country. In many ways, Haitians are getting access to better care now than ever before. But that may not last—as WRS’s Jordan Davis reports:
Work: 'Fixer' in Haiti Monday, 10 January, 2011Work travels to the streets of Haiti, where John Evens Darbouze is working as a fixer for our reporter Jordan Davis. A fixer is a local hire charged with clearing practical obstacles and smoothing the way for members of the media reporting from the earthquake zone a year after the disaster:
Still homeless in post-quake Haiti Monday, 10 January, 2011A year ago this week the Haitian earthquake captivated the world’s attention. Then, WRS’s Jordan Davis spent a day in the Port-au-Prince neighborhood of Bel Air. When he left, a woman was hoping her grandchildren were still alive under the rubble. Now, Jordan picks up the story of life on that block a year later:
Haiti still in a state of catastrophe Friday, 7 January, 2011Swiss aid organisations have painted a bleak picture of reconstruction efforts in Haiti following last January’s devastating earthquake. They say conditions remain catastrophic and that relief efforts have been paralysed by a lack of leadership from the Haitian government and the international community. They voiced their concerns at a press conference in Bern on Thursday. WRS’s Vincent Landon was there:
