U.S. will pressure Swiss to open up banking secrecy
Monday, 10 November, 2008 Switzerland’s banking secrecy could face intense pressure from the United States under the new Obama Administration. While a U.S. Senator, Obama did support legislation to “stop tax haven abuse” and Switzerland was listed as one of the haven countries. Some reports say Switzerland is the largest off-shore banking hub in the world with over $2 trillion. World Radio Switzerland’s Alex Helmick talks to Martin Naville, the head of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce, about the mounting pressure and what will happen to the Swiss tradition.

The outcome of today’s US elections could signal a major shift in the country’s foreign policy. The Bush administration has been criticized for short-circuiting the United Nations and pursuing a unilateral foreign policy. Will the next administration soothe those many ruffled feathers?
