Why high rollers go to Campione, 'an island inside Switzerland' Friday, 20 April, 2012 Switzerland is full of peculiarities but one of the oddest is a tiny part of Italy which is totally within the borders of Switzerland. It’s called Campione d’Italia. It nestles on the shore of Lake Lugano in canton Ticino and its best known claim to fame is its casino, the biggest in Europe. WRS’s Vincent Landon went for a visit:
Village objects to Italian traffic Monday, 19 March, 2012 Tens of thousands of Italians cross the border into canton Ticino every day to work. But one small village is fed up with the large number of commuters using it as a shortcut. The residents of Ligornetto have voted to close the centre of the village for three hours in the morning and three hours in the evening. The Italians aren’t happy and nor too are residents of neighbouring villages. WRS’s Vincent Landon has more:

Ticino voters go for right wing alliance Monday, 24 October, 2011 The right wing Swiss People’s Party may have lost ground in Sunday’s election, but South of the Alps in Ticino, 27 percent of voters supported the right wing Lega and the Ticinese section of the People’s Party. The two groups formed an alliance that served them well in this election. WRS’s Pete Forster turns to our Ticino correspondent Nicole della Pietra for details:
Chiasso appeals to Bern over refugee crime Tuesday, 16 August, 2011 Earlier this year, the mayor of Chiasso, in the canton of Ticino, wrote to the federal council in Bern to explain why the town didn’t want an asylum center anymore. He said it was because refugee crime was a burden. It was as much a plea for help as it was a provocation. On the border with Italy, some see Chiasso and its 8,000 residents on the front line of a growing Swiss angst over asylum seekers. WRS’s Tony Ganzer reports:
Tax battle intensifies between Italy and Ticino Monday, 25 July, 2011 Despite its healthy share of sunshine, a dark cloud hangs over the canton of Ticino. A tax battle with neighboring Italy is aggravating cross-border relations — and it shows no sign of ending. Negotiations on a new double-taxation agreement between Switzerland and Italy have bogged down, with banking secrecy a key stumbling block. Fed up with waiting, the Ticino authorities last month took matters into their own hands, by blocking 30 million francs in taxes bound for Italy. Some Italian politicians took notice, calling for tax talks to start immediately, but progress is still slow-going. WRS’s Tony Ganzer reports:

Destination architecture: 5 feats of design worth the trip Friday, 23 July, 2010 Modern architecture tells you as much about a society and culture as its ancient constructs. So maybe it’s the tendency of Swiss architects to avoid being labelled as image-conscious “star-chitects” that has led, over the last 20 years, to so many public buildings in Switzerland that defer to their surrounding landscapes. And since these are best seen outdoors and in good weather, what better time than summer to hit the road and soak in the natural brilliance:

'Fertility tourism' is inbound for Ticino Friday, 14 August, 2009 The rules governing reproductive medicine in Switzerland are tougher than in many other countries. Among other things, they include a ban on egg donation and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. But in neighbouring Italy, the laws are even more restrictive. That’s led many Italian couples to come to Italian-speaking Ticino for what is popularly called “fertility tourism”. WRS’s Vincent Landon visits a fertility clinic there to find out more.
