Protection group to 'shame' Swiss watchmakers using endangered species Thursday, 28 April, 2011 Swiss Animal Protection says 27 watchmakers in Switzerland, including all members of the Swatch Group, signed a declaration against using the skins of endangered species such as sharks for watch straps. But that’s only about a fifth of the Swiss companies the protection group is targeting. And by mid-summer the organization is threatening to “name or shame” the firms that won’t take the pledge. Sara Wehrli, head of the wildlife department at Swiss Animal Protection, tells WRS’s Vincent Landon exactly what the watchmakers who signed the declaration are agreeing to:
Federation upsets some firms with content rules for 'Swiss-made' watches Wednesday, 20 April, 2011 Can “Swissness” be measured? The watch industry thinks so and wants the rules governing Swiss timepieces to be more stringent. Among other things, the industry would like a minimum of 80 percent of production costs for mechanical watches (60 percent for electronic watches) to be incurred in Switzerland to earn the label “Swiss made.” However, some makers say this could increase prices and force companies out of the country. In Geneva today, the International Watch Fair opens—and it should show some insight as to whether that confidence is well founded. The watch fair is like the car show for time pieces. But small independent companies are often the first to go when bad financial fortunes hit. So has the industry felt the impact of the economic crisis? And what about the recent news that a big watchmaker was going to stop selling parts to smaller rivals? Reporter Alex Helmick has more.
