WRS’s Alex Helmick asks Christine Pielmeier from the Avalanche Warning Service at the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos, who recommends that skiers finish their off-piste ventures early in the day:

Now there might not be an awful lot of snow around at the moment but that hasn’t stopped two ski resorts from moving ahead on plans to get bigger and better. More than 30 years after the idea was first raised, the ski resorts of Lenzerheide and Arosa in the canton of Graubünden are finally on track to build a connecting lift. At a stroke, their combined ski area will become the 10th largest in Switzerland. WRS’s reporter Vincent Landon has more:

Swiss insurance firm Suva has warned for years of the dangers of excess speed on the ski slopes. This year their prevention campaign has gone high-tech with an iPhone application you can download for free which helps you to measure your speed. Samula Aegerter is responsible for Suva’s snow sports campaign. WRS’s Vincent Landon began by asking him how the app works:

Dig out the woolly hat, limber up and check your wallet. The snow’s coming down and ski lifts prices are going up. Gstaad is increasing prices by CHF 4, while St Moritz blames rising costs and increased federal taxes for a hike of between 2 and 3 percent. For a more detailed explanation, WRS’s Jo Fahy called on Marc Ziegler, director of education at Swiss Cableways, the umbrella group for ski lift operators:

For the past 20 years this activity has drawn fire from environmental groups and mountaineers alike. They say 15,000 flights a year disturb people and wildlife—and pollute the atmosphere. Armed with 12,000 signatures, this group now hopes to put pressure on the federal government to impose a ban. Heliski operators say they’re victims of witch hunt, but some seem willing to compromise. There are 70,000 accidents a year on ski slopes in Switzerland. Some are the result of skiers and snowboarders going off the slopes and setting off avalanches, but an overwhelming majority stem from collisions and falls on the slopes.
The equipment is faster, the runs are built for speed and some people feel that the respect skiers once had for one another has largely melted away over the years. So, is the time drawing near for Swiss resorts to go the way of the Italians and hire ski police?
Reporter Lucas Chambers put the question to skiers and staff at the resort Verbier, in canton Valais:

But devices which can help search and rescue to locate avalanche victims are only useful if they’re used properly. Lucas Chambers went to the ski resort of Haute Nendaz to visit one of a handful of avalanche training centers in Switzerland:
