Thousands of gymnasts wow Lausanne

Gymnasts of every age — even as young as five — are wowing crowds in Lausanne with gymnastic demonstrations. In a week-long series of performances, which began on Sunday at the Pontaise stadium, 19,000 gymnasts from 55 countries are showing off their talents at the 14th World Gymnaestrada. The popular non-competitive sports event takes place every four years with the aid of more than 4,000 volunteers. WRS’s Lucas Chambers reports:

On terraces caught between a busy street and a bustling building, three hives have appeared, and their residents are busy now too, pollinating the lavender and geraniums. The fruit of their labor could soon be on sale in local stores. WRS’s Lucas Chambers finds out more:

Athletissma is on now in Lausanne. The track and field competition will have some big names there, but not Usain Bolt. The men’s 100 meter record setter is not running tonight. Begging has been banned in many Swiss cities, but not in Lausanne—at least not so far. Last week, city politicians rejected a motion by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party that would have banned the practice from the city’s streets. But the issue isn’t going away. The Liberal Party has said it now wants the people to decide whether Lausanne should be a beggar-free zone. Reporter Lucas Chambers has the story:

It’s no surprise then that renovations are much needed. But these are costly, as is maintaining the various ports of call. So who should pay, how much and under what circumstances? Talks in Lausanne tackled these prickly questions yesterday, to little avail. WRS’s Lucas Chambers filed this report.

So maybe it’s the tendency of Swiss architects to avoid being labelled as image-conscious “star-chitects” that has led, over the last 20 years, to so many public buildings in Switzerland that defer to their surrounding landscapes. And since these are best seen outdoors and in good weather, what better time than summer to hit the road and soak in the natural brilliance:

For the first time ever, the Lausanne Opera will be touring close to home, stopping in small towns all across the Canton of Vaud as part of their Route Lyrique. The finals of the 37th annual Prix de Lausanne were held today. This is one of the most prestigious international ballet competitions in the world. Student-dancers aged 15 to 18 compete all week long at the Beaulieu Theatre. The grand-prize winners are awarded a full-scholarship at a school or dance company of their choice. This year the jury was headed by Karen Kain. Seventy-three competitors overall partook in the event and WRS video journalist Amy Wong followed one of the talented young dancers, Jemima Dean, throughout the competition.
