The French with a bit of money to invest have been peering over the border for a couple of years now. The canton of Jura in particular has caught their eye. Since January this year, a high speed train connection puts it within just over two hours of Paris. The canton also offers lots of investment opportunities, but above all, it goes easy on taxes. And with the new left wing regime now in power in France, the number of new arrivals is growing fast. What does this mean for Jura’s economy and the cost of living? WRS’s Lucas Chambers reports from the town of Porrentruy:

Jura is one of the most promising areas for wind park projects in Switzerland. And with the country’s decision to move away from nuclear energy there’s a growing necessity for renewable replacements. But the villagers of Bourrignon recently voted against a plan to install wind turbines near their homes. But local authorities could overrule the vote—in spite of the protests. If they do, some villagers have threatened to blow up the wind turbines. On either side of the argument are Alain Giger from the Geneva based utility company SIG, and David Eray is a Christian Democrat MP for Jura and a member of the anti-wind turbine association Librevent. They talk to WRS’s Dave Goodman:

The canton of Jura is now selling itself as the closest Swiss region to Paris. That is since the high speed TGV train linked up with Jura, making the journey to Paris just 2.5 hours. After years of relatively difficult access, Jura is also now linked up with the Swiss motorway network. To coincide with these new connections, Jura has launched a PR campaign to attract new visitors to the region. Roughly translated, the slogan is “Jura, the original canton.” WRS’s Dave Goodman talks to Pierre-Alain Berret, head of communications for the canton:

It was over Beijing’s vocal opposition that two ethnic Uighur brothers from China came to live in Switzerland six months ago. They were locked up for eight years at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay but never charged with any crime. The pair was among 22 Uighurs seized at a camp in Afghanistan after the American-led bombing campaign began in 2001, a month after the 9/11 attacks. Switzerland granted Arkin and Bahtiyar Mahmud asylum on humanitarian grounds. The brothers now live in canton Jura and, a short while ago, met the media for the first time. Pierre-Alain Berret speaks for the canton and was at the news conference. He spoke to Susan Flory:

The “Jura” bit of the word “Jurassic,” as in Jurassic Park of movie megafame, is rooted in the Swiss canton of the same name. This weekend, in the town of Courtedoux, this will be the last chance to see some supremely impressive dinosaur tracks before they’re buried under bitumen. Crews start laying pavement for the new A16 motorway on Monday. Guided tours can be had both weekend days from 10 am through 7 pm. Susan Flory talks to Celine Fuchs, project manager of the dinosaur site Paleojura near the town of Courtedoux.

Imagine: a North Romandie hub made up of the cantons of Jura and Neuchâtel and the French speaking part of Bern, otherwise known as the Bernese Jura. A poll put out by French-language public broadcaster Radio Suisse Romande and a number of regional newspapers asked the populations of these areas what they think of the idea of creating a “super-canton”—and a surprising 60 percent responded favourably. But in a country where cantons jealously guard their independence, could it actually happen?

Délémont Mayor Pierre Kohler has a quirky new project to bring a little Hollywood shine to his small town in the Canton of Jura in the form of a giant sign in the foothills. Same font, same size—only the letters will spell out Délémont of course. A trophy to celebrate the fact that Switzerland’s designated film for the Oscars will from now on be selected here, says the mayor. An eye-sore and yet another blow to nature, say environmentalists. Local inhabitants seem somewhat divided over the idea. Lucas Chambers has the story:

The heartland of Switzerland’s famous clock and watchmaking industry is switching its economic focus, with a new partnership deal with Basel, building a four-year trade arrangement with western Switzerland. Susan Flory spoke to Dr. Suzanne Thoma from the Basel Area, which promotes Basel’s economy, and asked what this means for the bigger picture of intercantonal relations.

The canton expects hunters to keep the boars—and all the other pests—in check.
