Cinema Roundtable: Locarno’s place in the film world Thursday, 13 August, 2009 Locarno is constantly battling to retain its place as one of the top international festivals, says festival president Marco Solari. To find out where it stands and how important that is to other players in the industry, WRS’s Conor Lennon brings to the table Dan Wechsler, film producer at Bord Cadre films, Christian Jungen, film critic at the Aargauer Zeitung newspaper and Doctor Martin Blaney from industry magazine Screen International.
Battle over movie ratings likely to have a sequel Thursday, 13 August, 2009 How old should you be to watch the latest Harry Potter film? The answer varies from one canton to another, and that’s driving a lot of people up the wall. Leading the charge for change is Procinema, a group representing cinema owners and film distributors in Switzerland. It would like ratings to be set by the film industry—which would be cheaper, easier and coherent across the board. But many cantons cringe at this affront to their sovereignty, saying there is too much at stake to let others decide what’s good for their kids. Lucas Chambers has the story:

CERN sees its name in lights Wednesday, 6 May, 2009 The media and CERN employees got a chance to see the Large Hadron Collider in action but only on the big screen at a special press debut in Geneva. The new film Angels and Demons is the sequel to The da Vinci Code and has some scenes shot at the European Organization for Nuclear Research just outside of Geneva. Reporter Alex Helmick went to the screening and has this review.

Swiss director to be honoured Wednesday, 10 December, 2008 Alain Tanner was a leading figure in Switzerland’s New Wave of directors in the ’60s and ’70s and is still making movies into his eighth decade. Early next year, in his 80th year, Cinématheque of France and Switzerland will hold major retrospectives of Tanner’s work. WRS’s Conor Lennon met up with professor Maria Tortajada, who lectures in film at Lausanne University and specialises in Tanner’s work.

The makers of Opération Casablanca, which is shooting in locations across the country, think their film fits into this category. Is it because they aren’t any good? Or is it, as we are told, because the country is split along linguistic lines, with different tastes for each region? Swiss film flops Wednesday, 26 November, 2008 Forty feature films a year is a pretty good haul for a country the size of Switzerland. It’s even more impressive when you take into account the different languages and cultures that make up the potential audience. However, this year there have been significantly fewer bums on seats when Swiss films are in the cinemas. The man from the culture ministry says he’s “disappointed”. Genevois director takes us to 'Nomad's Land' Thursday, 11 September, 2008 Nomad’s Land is a lyrical, literary trip through the wilds of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan in the company of Genevan filmmaker Gaël Motraz, which came about Swiss traveller and writer Nicolas Bouvier’s L’Usage du Monde inspired him to recreate that journey from Geneva to Iran and Pakistan some 50 years on. However, it didn’t quite work out like that. Mr. Motraz dropped by our studios and Conor Lennon asked if he started making up the film as he went along…
