But beyond the scratched image, the company did rather well last year. easyJet held a press conference at Geneva International Airport yesterday to give out figures and talk about its new focus. The head of easyJet in Switzerland has come out and apologised for the problems faced by the airline over the summer. Jean-Marc Thévenaz is quoted in the Swiss press as saying the company is working seven days a week to contact discontented passengers and sort out compensation. He also says they’ve put measures in place to ensure a reduction in the amount of delays, including have a plane on standby. WRS’s Conor Lennon spoke to Mr. Thévenaz, but first we hear from independent Swiss aviation expert and former pilot Pierre Condom.

easyJet is still in the firing line for failing to meet its basic corporate obligation to stick to its own flight schedule. Flights taking off late is one problem—but how about when they leave early? According to last Wednesday’s Blick newspaper, a flight from Alicante to Basel left 50 minutes early and a family was left stranded. After a spate of last-minute delays and cancellations in recent weeks, easyJet management has been ticked off by frustrated authorities at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. It is, after all, the main airline servicing the airport. As for the many passengers frustrated by the company’s chronic punctuality problems, it seems there is very little to be done beyond the obvious. WRS’s Susan Flory caught up with Beat Dannenberger, ombudsman to the travel industry.

When the founder of easyJet says even he has had enough of delays, we can be certain there’s a real problem. Striking air traffic controllers in Paris have compounded problems this week, but for some reason easyJet seems to have been particularly affected. Now the budget airline’s founder and main shareholder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has said he’ll withdraw the company’s right to use the name if the current management can’t get their act together. WRS’s Conor Lennon compares what easyJet had to say on the matter when we spoke to them last week, with the current worsening situation.

Even if Swiss air space were reopened after 2 pm, the earliest easyJet flights would start back would be tomorrow. And once they do start it’s going to be a big job to unravel the backlog and get back to business, says airline spokesman Peter Voets.
